I have been involved with photography - producing and collecting work - since the early 1970's.
For much of that time I concentrated on black and white film photography, using camera formats ranging from 35mm to 4x5, making prints in my personal darkrooms. I transitioned to digital in 2009, providing the added flexibility to produce color prints. Whether film or digital, personal control and execution of the entire process from camera to matted and framed print has remained paramount.
I see the print, not a computer display, as the best expression of my photography. Prints can vary in ways that aren't demonstrated on screen: in size (some intimate, some expansive), in texture and tonality, and in luminosity and richness. But only a limited audience gets to share in that experience. This website is a new venture for me, a more informal way to share a cross-section of mostly recent work.
The philosophy behind my photography is simple: I take pictures of things that interest and move me enough to want to see the printed result. The added benefits, including the opportunity to travel and interact with people and their surroundings, have been significant. More than just pictures, photography has remained an important part of my life.
The equipment used or the work required to produce these photographs is not important; the picture either engages the viewer or not. I hope that something here resonates with you. Thanks for looking.
